Why Sensory Smart is featured on Never Grey

Sensory Smart provide a variety of clothing solutions designed to offer sensory support for individuals of all ages who experience sensitivities or disabilities that complicate the use of everyday essential garments or situations.

With compression to offer that sensation of being hugged, sewn down seams or seam-free clothing for comfort and softness and popper fasteners at the crotch to go over nappies, Sensory Smart has thought through what methods can bring comfort to people with Sensory Processing Disorder.

SPD is a neurological condition that affects the way the brain processes sensory information. While it is most commonly diagnosed in children, it can persist into adulthood and have a significant impact on an individual’s quality of life. Recognising the signs can be the first step toward understanding and managing the condition.

One of the hallmark signs of SPD is an unusual response to sensory stimuli, which can present as either over-sensitivity (hypersensitivity) or under-sensitivity (hyposensitivity) to touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound.

People with SPD often find it challenging to focus on a specific sound or conversation in noisy settings. Their brains may struggle to filter out distracting noises, making it difficult to concentrate and leading to frustration, irritability, and anxiety in social situations, not to mention the impact on performance at work.

To cope with their heightened sensitivity, some may constantly fidget or look for intense sensory experiences, like loud music or spicy food. When faced with excessive sensory input, individuals can become overwhelmed, resulting in emotional outbursts or meltdowns.

People with SPD may face difficulties with fine motor skills like buttoning clothing or they might also struggle with gross motor skills, such as navigating stairs, which can lead to clumsiness and self-consciousness due to poor balance and spatial awareness.

A heightened sensitivity can cause inflexibility or resistance to change, making it tough to adapt to new situations can also lead to social and emotional difficulties.

Founded by Mel Thomsett, a mother whose son was diagnosed with autism at the age of two, Sensory Smart was established to ease the challenges posed by clothing with itchy labels and uncomfortable seams. Her personal journey inspired her to create the Sensory Smart Store, focusing on solutions for families dealing with sensory processing disorders. Mel is passionate about helping children who have sensitivities to seams, labels, fabrics, and textures.

Sensory Smart's goal is to find solutions that allow people wth SPD  to engage fully in all aspects of life, free from discomfort caused by lumps, bumps, fabrics, or seams.

Sensory Smart Store has grown to include products for sensitive adults and offers a range of other effective solutions to support individuals of all ages with sensitivities.
