Why We’re Featuring Dotty About Braille on Never Grey
We’re proud to shine a spotlight on Dotty About Braille, a brilliant and much‐needed business and here’s exactly why we believe it aligns so powerfully with the ethos of Never Grey.A founder with lived experience & vision.
Dotty About Braille was founded in May 2023 by Hayley Kellard, a disabled entrepreneur based in Greater Manchester. Hayley’s personal journey living with a rare genetic eye condition (Wagner’s Syndrome) and other health challenges gives her invaluable insight into the accessibility landscape.
Her story embodies authenticity: she didn’t simply spot a gap in the market; she experienced the gap firsthand. That authenticity resonates with our commitment at Never Grey to amplify voices from those who understand the lived experience of exclusion and are actively working to change it. Addressing a meaningful unmet need. In the UK alone, there are approximately 20,000 braille users. For many of them, greeting cards, celebratory messages and everyday “just because” notes often neglect their needs or exclude them altogether.
Dotty About Braille steps into that space. The business specialises in personalised, accessible braille greeting cards, adhesive labels & letters, print + braille cards, and transcribing services. By creating affordable, thoughtfully designed braille cards, Hayley is helping to enable inclusion in one of the simplest yet most meaningful forms of communication: sending and receiving a card. Many visually-impaired people have reported that their options were limited, expensive, or insufficiently accessible. Dotty About Braille changes that. Creativity, inclusivity and accessible design
What’s particularly compelling is how Dotty About Braille doesn’t treat accessibility as an afterthought, it weaves it into the core product and ethos. For example:
- The cards are designed so that blind and visually impaired people can read them and feel included (the braille is the primary ‘front’ text).
- They come in a variety of colours (recognising that many blind/visually impaired people do have favourite colours) and the colour is referenced on the back for clarity.
- The business also offers free printable braille resources (flash-cards, colouring pages, quizzes) to raise awareness and educate sighted people.
These features make the brand a perfect example of inclusive design, a principle we deeply value at Never Grey.Empowerment & entrepreneurship Hayley’s story goes beyond product innovation, it is about empowerment. She, as a disabled entrepreneur, is carving out new territory, challenging normative assumptions (about what greeting cards should look like, about who can run businesses, about accessibility) and creating meaningful impact.
By featuring Dotty About Braille, Never Grey helps uplift this narrative: that inclusive business is not just a moral imperative, it’s creative, economically viable and socially valuable.Alignment with the Never Grey mission At Never Grey, we believe in celebrating brands and people who:
- Create more inclusive experiences;
- Disrupt exclusion by design;
- Tell stories of under-represented entrepreneurs;
- And provide real, tangible value to communities often overlooked.
Dotty About Braille ticks all of those boxes. It’s not a token nod to accessibility, it sits at the centre of the brand's identity.
Why now?
With growing awareness of accessibility in design, inclusive gifting, and the social value of representation, a brand like Dotty About Braille is particularly timely. For the visually impaired, receiving a greeting card that they can read themselves matters. It’s about dignity, independence and inclusion. By featuring it now, we help amplify that message and perhaps encourage more brands to follow this example.In short: we’re featuring Dotty About Braille because it’s more than a niche card company, it’s an inclusive, heart-led initiative addressing a specific community need with creativity, integrity and entrepreneurial spirit. We believe our readers at Never Grey will resonate with this story, appreciate the product offering, and understand the deeper significance of what’s being achieved.
