Adaptive Amputees: Turning One Story into a Community

For Alex Parvin, Adaptive Amputees began with a simple idea: become the person she needed growing up.

Born in Mineralnyvodi, Russia with clubfoot and tibial hemimelia, Alex's right leg developed differently and doctors believed there was little they could do. Her birth parents made the heartbreaking decision to place her in an orphanage, hoping she would be adopted by a family who could give him the medical care she needed. That hope became reality when an American couple adopted Alex and brought her to the United States, where he underwent an amputation and began a new chapter.

Growing Up with Difference
School life for Alex was hard as she was met with constant questions, bullying and the feeling of being the 'odd one out' as the only child in the school with a prosthetic leg. Whether on the sports field or in everyday life, Alex became acutely aware of how different she appeared from those around her.

Everything changed during high school when she launched an amputee awareness project. After speaking at local schools, a young girl approached her to say she'd never met another adopted person before and finally felt proud of her own story. It was a powerful reminder that simply sharing your experience can help someone else feel seen.

A brand was born

That moment became the foundation for Adaptive Amputees, now a free online resource supporting people living with limb loss, Alex, who is also a biomedical engineer, combines her platform on practical advice on prosthetics, fitness, mental health, healthcare and everyday life with a range of merchandise to raise awareness.

Alongside the educational resources, Adaptive Amputees also offers a vibrant range of hoodies, T-shirts and baseball caps in bold, bright colours. These items are not just clothing but work as visual conversation starters, designed to raise awareness, celebrate disability pride and encourage visibility and empathy.

Adaptive Amputees proves that advocacy doesn't always begin on a big stage. Sometimes it starts with one person deciding that no one else should have to feel as alone as they once did.

At Never Grey we support journeys of all paths for people with disabilities and neurodivergence and we feature brands that advocate for better understanding and growing inclusivity, that's why we feature Adaptive Amputees.
