Meet the Founder of Comfa

Meet Comfa, a family-run business that is dedicated to creating clothing that caters to the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals.

At just 10 years old Max, along with his dad Matt, designed the world's first clothing line featuring built-in pop fidgets. Max’s journey into creating this sensory fashion brand has been nothing short of extraordinary. During a moment of creativity in his room, surrounded by a box of sensory aids he uses for regulation, Max wondered aloud, “Has anyone ever put these in T-shirts?”

The idea was brilliant. Simple, never been done before and almost obvious. Having sensory aids within clothing means they would always be accessible, safe, discreet and difficult to lose. Merging fidgeting with fashion was the perfect combination of Max’s lived experiences and interests as a neurodivergent child.

Broadcasting on the BBC

As one of the UK's youngest inventors, Max is deeply involved in every aspect of Comfa and as the idea grew into a business venture the Father and Son team appeared on BBC's Dragon’s Den. Filmed over a year before it was broadcast meant keeping the secret from friends and family for a long time, many of whom had encouraged them to apply.

Despite the strong competition to be selected to feature on the programme, Comfa were chosen and Max delivered an impressive pitch to the Dragons, showcasing the brand’s vision. Matt told us that the production team accommodated their needs by bringing in sensory lights to the dressing room and this boosted Max’s confidence for his big TV moment!

A family affair

In addition to clothing, Comfa are also passionate about providing resources to support the neurodivergent community. Max's mum Lauren has crafted digital downloads based on the insights they wished they had when as a family they first embarked on this journey.

Comfa’s free recent guide on Declarative Language had 2,000 downloads in the first 24 hours! As a family-oriented brand, Matt shared with us how rewarding it is to see others benefiting from these resources.

“We want to educate and support as many people as we can. It can feel incredibly lonely at times being a parent with a Neurodivergent child, and we want everyone to know that they aren’t alone. We actually started this journey because Max wanted to help other families with his experiences, so it’s nice to see it come full circle. Even if things stopped with the clothing business side, we would continue to advocate and campaign for the neurodivergent community.”

The future is fidget friendly

Comfa strives to be the go-to destination for neurodivergent individuals, providing a robust collection of clothing for both adults and children. Max’s goal is to ensure that no one has to choose between comfort and style, so we live in a world where everyone feels good in themselves in what they wear.

This adaptive fashion brand recently launched an adult T-shirt range, available in both long-sleeved and short-sleeved options and they have plans for a school polo shirt to allow children to have the fidget incorporated into their daily school uniform.
