Accessible outdoor gear is changing the way we experience adventure
As the sun shines and the temperatures soar, it’s natural to want to spend time outside getting some vitamin D and fresh air but outdoor gear has always been designed with a narrow idea of who wants to experience adventures.
But a new generation of products designs with access to the Great Outdoors in mind, and North Face are leading the way. This established brand, synonymous with nature and adventure and travel, have three new key items for the outdoor experience.
The Sleeping Bag
Instead of relying on fiddly zippers, it uses one-hand-friendly magnetic FIDLOCK™ closures that fasten securely with minimal effort. Combined with an insulated winged design that makes entry and exit easier, it offers greater independence and comfort.
And with adaptable temperature regulation throughout the night, this is a plus for everyone who wants to sleep out under the stars.
The Tent
Traditional tents are known for their challenging assembly, especially for people with limited dexterity, reduced vision, or mobility impairments.
This thoughtful design addresses this with equal-length poles for simplified setup. The easy-catch pole mounts have highly visible pole sleeves so if you arrive at your site later than planned and the sun is setting when you get to put your tent up, you can see enough to get your roof over your head ready for bedtime.
Designed with a larger entrance area to accommodate mobility devices and inside there is room for wheelchairs and mobility equipment. This provides space to comfortably move around and feel at home with the mobility aids you need.
The Backpack
Designed to be carried in multiple ways, it features configurable straps that accommodate a range of body types and mobility devices. A magnetic FIDLOCK™ top closure allows easy one-handed access to gear, whilst a haul-boot construction enables the pack to stand upright on its own for easier loading and unloading. A key feature everyone can enjoy.
Breaking down barriers
What makes these products stand out isn't just their accessibility features, it's that they improve the experience for all outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're managing a disability, recovering from an injury, carrying a mobility device, wearing gloves in cold weather, or simply looking for gear that's easier to use, thoughtful design makes a difference.
As we know at Never Grey, accessibility and great design go hand in hand and inclusive design benefits everyone. Who doesn’t want a quick assembly tent, or a sleeping bag that doesn’t have a tiny zip you need to fumble for and gets stuck halfway up?
The end result is a campsite setup that is easier, faster, and more inclusive for everyone. These innovations are a reminder that accessibility isn't a niche consideration. It's a design opportunity that creates better products, better experiences, and more opportunities for everyone to enjoy the outdoors this summer.
